Drug repurposing

The studies within this project are undertaken to investigate the repurposing of drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

By using data from a study conducted in cardiovascular patients, a recent study demonstrated that colchicine, an ancient remedy for gout, is probably effective against osteoarthritis as well. However, this finding needs to be confirmed in patients with osteoarthritis.

That is why the Sint Maartenskliniek wants to conduct a follow-up study, starting in 2024. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that colchicine can be an effective and suitable therapeutic option for patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis.

In addition, the effect of treatments for osteoporosis, gout and diabetes will be investigated in a UK primary care database.
